If you’ve ever opened a tray of cluster lashes and thought, “Okay… where do I even start?”—same. A lash cluster size chart is basically the cheat sheet that tells you what lengths to place from inner corner → outer corner so your set looks intentional (not random). It’s the difference between “I tried” and “wait… your lashes look professionally mapped.”

Cluster lashes are like strip lashes cut into smaller sections, usually with a thicker base. Because they’re applied in segments, mapping matters even more: each little piece is visible in the final shape. When the lengths flow correctly, the eye looks lifted, open, and balanced. When they don’t… it can look heavy, droopy, or spiky in the wrong places.

How to read a lash cluster size chart (without overthinking it)

Most charts list numbers like 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16. Those are millimeters (mm), aka the lash length. A map is written in the order you place them across the eye.

I like to think of it as a “gradient”:

Inner corner = shorter (so it doesn’t poke or close the eye)

Center = medium/long (creates roundness and openness)

Outer corner = depends on the style (either longest for a cat eye, or slightly shorter for an open eye so it doesn’t drag)

Also: some maps mention stacked. That means layering clusters (usually in the outer half) to build extra density or drama. It’s not required, but it’s a fun option when you want more volume without switching styles.

The 6 lash mapping styles I use the most (with size charts)

These are the maps I keep coming back to because they’re easy to follow and they work with common cluster lengths. If your eye is smaller, you can scale everything down by 1–2mm and keep the same pattern.

1) Natural Map (soft, everyday, “my lashes but better”)

If you want something that doesn’t scream “false lashes,” this is the one. It gently builds length toward the outer half without going too sharp.

Natural size chart: 10, 10, 12, 12, 12, 14, 14

This pattern is nice because the repeated 12s keep the middle smooth, and the 14s at the end give a subtle lift. If the inner corner feels too long for you, swap the first “10” for an 8 or 9.

Placement tip: keep the bases super aligned here. Natural sets look best when the lash line is clean and even.

2) Open Eye Map (bright, awake, “I slept 8 hours” energy)

Open eye mapping is my go-to when my eyes look tired or when I want that rounded, lifted look without going full doll eye. The longest point sits closer to the center, then it tapers slightly toward the outer corner so the eye doesn’t droop.

Open eye size chart: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14

This is a super clean progression. If you want it softer, stop at 13. If you want it more dramatic, repeat 14 once more near the outer third, but don’t overload the very last outer corner.

Little trick: if your outer corners naturally turn down, keep the final segment 1–2mm shorter than the peak length. That tiny change can make the whole eye look lifted.

3) Cat Eye Map (snatched, elongated, outer-corner focus)

Cat eye is the classic “longer toward the outer corner” style. It’s flattering when you want a stretched, lifted vibe, but it can look heavy if the outer corner gets too long too fast—so the ramp-up matters.

Cat eye size chart: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 13

I love that this version ends with a slight drop (the final 13). That helps prevent the very edge from dragging down, especially if your eyes are round or slightly downturned.

Pro feel without the stress: place the 14 slightly before the very last segment, then finish with 13 at the tail. It gives that lifted “wing” effect.

4) Baby Doll Map (round, cute, center emphasis)

Baby doll mapping makes the eye look bigger by putting the longest lengths in the middle and keeping the inner and outer corners shorter. It’s one of the easiest styles to make look symmetrical, especially for beginners.

Baby doll size chart: 10, 11, 12, 12, 12, 12, 11

This is soft and wearable, but still gives that wide-eyed look. If you want more drama, swap the center 12s for 13s and keep the same shape.

Balance tip: make sure both eyes peak at the same spot (usually right over the pupil). If one peak shifts outward, the eyes can look uneven even if the lengths match.

5) Hybrid Map (texture + softness, not too uniform)

Hybrid mapping is for when you want a little more personality—some lift, some length, a bit of “wispy” energy without going super spiky. The lengths jump more than a natural map, which creates dimension.

Hybrid size chart: 11, 13, 15, 15, 13, 11

This is a shorter map (fewer segments), which makes it great for quick sets. The two 15s in the middle/outer-middle give a bold focal point, while the 11s on both ends keep it balanced.

Texture tip: if your clusters come in different densities, mix a slightly fuller cluster at the 15s and lighter ones at the 11s/13s. It makes the blend look intentional.

6) Wispy Map (airy spikes, “lash extension” vibe)

Wispy mapping is all about controlled contrast: shorter “base” lengths with a few longer moments that read like spikes. You can do it in layers or just by alternating lengths.

Wispy map option (two-row idea):

1st row: 12, 12, 13, 13, 14

2nd row: 14, 15, 16, 16, 16

This kind of layout is perfect if you like a fluffy top line. Think of the first row as your foundation and the second row as the drama. If you’re not stacking, you can still borrow the “wispy logic” by sprinkling a 15 or 16 near the outer half and keeping the rest 12–14.

Control tip: keep the longest pieces away from the inner corner. Wispy looks best when the drama lives from the center outward.

Extra maps I pull out when I want something different

Kitten Eye Map (cat eye’s softer cousin)

Kitten eye gives elongation, but it’s more subtle than a full cat eye. It’s great when you want lift without going too sharp.

Kitten eye size chart: 11, 12, 10, 11, 9, 10, 8

This one looks “editorial” because it tapers down more dramatically at the end. If that feels too tapered, keep the last two segments closer (like 10, 9 instead of 10, 8).

Fox Eye Map (lifted, tapered, outer corner sleek)

Fox eye mapping usually creates a lifted outer shape with a sharper taper. It can look amazing, but it’s the easiest to overdo if you go too long on the tail.

Fox eye size chart: 12, 11, 9, 13, 8, 12, 7

This style is more about placement and angle than pure length. Keep the outer clusters angled slightly upward (not straight out). If your natural outer corner points downward, that upward angle is everything.

Stacked drama map (when I want bold outer volume)

Sometimes I want that “full glam” outer corner. A stacked map can look like: 18, 18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8 with extra layering around the longer lengths. This is not an everyday map for most people, but it’s useful if you’re recreating a dramatic lash look for photos or events.

Important: if you stack, keep the base neat. A messy base gets twice as noticeable when there are two layers.

My step-by-step method to build any lash map (so it actually looks like the chart)

Step 1: Mark your “peak.” Before placing anything, decide where the longest length will sit: center for doll/open eye, outer third for cat eye, slightly outer-middle for hybrid.

Step 2: Place inner corner first (shortest). Inner corner comfort matters. If it pokes, you’ll want to remove the whole set. I usually start with 8–10mm depending on the style.

Step 3: Build the gradient. Follow the size chart in order. If the chart says 9,10,11,12,13,14,13—commit to the flow. Random swaps are what make a set look uneven.

Step 4: Check both eyes at the same time. I don’t finish one eye completely anymore. I place 2–3 segments on one eye, then mirror on the other. It keeps the peaks aligned.

Step 5: Adjust only at the very end. If something looks off, I adjust by changing one segment (usually the last outer piece) by 1mm. Big changes mid-map can throw off the whole shape.

Choosing the right map for your eye shape (quick, practical)

If the outer corners turn down: open eye or a cat eye that ends shorter (like the 14 then 13 finish) tends to lift better than a super-long outer tail.

If the eyes are close-set: avoid heavy inner corners. Start shorter (8–9mm) and keep the longest point slightly outward to create space.

If the eyes are wide-set: baby doll and natural maps can bring focus toward the center and make the eyes feel more balanced.

If the lids are hooded: wispy or hybrid can help because texture shows even when the lid covers part of the lash line. Keeping the outermost piece from being the absolute longest can also prevent a “droop” effect.

Common mistakes that make a lash cluster map look “off” (and how I fix them)

Mistake 1: Inner corner too long. If the inner corner feels heavy or pokes, it can make the whole eye look smaller. Fix: drop the first segment by 1–2mm (example: swap 10 → 8/9).

Mistake 2: Outer corner is the longest AND the last piece. That can drag the eye down. Fix: put the longest piece one segment before the end, then taper down (like ending with 13 instead of 14).

Mistake 3: No smooth transition. Jumping from 10 to 14 too early can look choppy. Fix: add a bridge length (11–12–13) so the map blends.

Mistake 4: Both eyes follow the same numbers but not the same placement. This is the sneaky one. Fix: make sure the “peak” sits over the same spot on both eyes, not just the same mm lengths.
